What started out as a simple request from one of our students, turned into one of our biggest and most successful Halloween Sewing Parties; Make a Halloween Costume for Your American Girl Doll!
In the middle of summer during one of our sewing camps a student ask if she could make her American girl doll a Halloween costume. Since we run an open sewing studio, meaning the students are free to make and design what they want, I said sure. I told her that all of my fall fabrics were stored away so we had to use what was in the studio at the time. She wanted to make her doll a pumpkin Halloween costume. We found orange and black felt in our felt scrap box and went right to work. We used a luncheon plate as our pattern. As soon as all the other students saw what was developing, they all wanted in on the costume making!
Now we host this 3-hour “Make a Halloween Costume for Your American Girl Doll” workshop each year several weeks before Halloween. We go all out! Students not only make the costumes for their dolls, but also a Trick-or-Treat bag, a mask, and any type of hat, glove, or boot, that can go with the costume. We have Halloween music playing in the background, and we have our Trick-or-Treat table set up with homemade Halloween cupcakes, cookies, and drinks. At the end of the workshop we do a photo shoot with the dolls all in costume, and we give each of the students a goodie bag filled with Halloween candy!
The process in making the costumes is very easy and you are more than welcome to use our patterns and directions. Please send us photos of your next Make a Halloween Costume for Your American Girl Doll Sewing Party! We’d love to post them.
